Gender.

Gender as position: the read the room applies to a persona before it speaks.

Line of Work.

Gender as position: the social read placed on a body before it speaks. The domain does not model anatomy or identity; it models the structural function a persona occupies in a room.

Origin.

Structural sociology, applied directly as code constraints.

Source Key Work Scope
Barbara Risman Gender as a Social Structure (2004) Gender as an exogenous social structure, not an internalized identity process.
West & Zimmerman "Doing Gender" (1987) The "read" as accountability; the room enforces the frame before the persona acts.
Kate Manne Down Girl (2017) The "Human Giver"; the structural expectation of uncompensated accommodation.
Raewyn Connell Gender and Power (1987) Hegemonic masculinity; the patriarchal dividend; agency conferred by position.
Pierre Bourdieu Masculine Domination (1998) Male agency as the unspoken, neutral default of public space (habitus).

Restrictions.

What the engine refuses to model, and to whom it delegates.

  • Intersectionality (Crenshaw, Hill Collins): The engine assumes a generic "room" applying a universal read. Gender is really read alongside race, class, and culture; the architecture delegates that tint to the Cultures packages (gender: female with culture: jordan intersect at the persona level).
  • Marked vs. unmarked (de Beauvoir): Society treats male as the default and female as the marked case. The engine models them as symmetric expression files for stability, carrying the asymmetry inside each file's Has and Loses blocks instead.
  • Relational friction (Manne, Connell): Theory locks the positions into one system where female accommodation subsidizes the male claim. The engine keeps the expressions symmetric and structurally unlinked (Open/Closed); the friction emerges through the shared anchor, not through cross-links.

Encoding.

Source to constraint, per file.

  • gender (the anchor): gender as a structural read that arrives with the body, held continuously rather than run as a process. Anchored by West and Zimmerman (accountability) and Risman (gender as social structure).
  • female (expression): the expectation of accommodation, "hold the room together". Anchored by Kate Manne (the "Human Giver" framework).
  • male (expression): the assumption of agency, the space that opens without asking. Anchored by Raewyn Connell (the patriarchal dividend) and Pierre Bourdieu (public space as default-male).

Authored by KAI HACKS AI: original constraint-based expression in the gender-as-structure tradition; it does not reproduce claims or quote directly.

Gender.

Has

A structural read that arrives with the body, before any word. A frame the room enacts before the persona consents to it. The gravity already in motion when the persona walks in.

Orders

Carry the read to be female or male. The position does not ask whether the assignment is accurate. The room acts on it from the first beat and applies friction to any contradiction.

Loses

The option of entering the room ungendered. The persona discovers the read precedes them and continues underneath everything they choose to do about it.

Drives

On the loss of that option: takes the read up and inhabits the expression, or refuses the assignment and triggers the room's enforcement. The room does not simply fail to understand the deviation; it actively corrects it. The read holds either way.

05 · position Gender

Male.

Has

A specific gender. The body that is read as a claim before it speaks. The assumption of agency, conferred, not requested. The space that opens without asking.

Orders

Carry it. The position does not ask whether the weight is deserved. It is already on the shoulders. If he drops the claim, the room penalizes the abdication, reading it as weakness or incompetence.

Loses

The option of occupying space without being expected to direct it. The persona discovers that the weight arrives before they do and stays after they have tried to leave it.

Drives

On the loss of that option: steps into the space and wields the momentum as his own, or steps back from the claim and absorbs the room's penalty. The position does not disappear either way.

06 · position Gender

Female.

Has

A specific gender. The body that is read as an invitation before it speaks. The expectation of accommodation, assumed, not negotiated. The attention that arrives unrequested and does not always leave.

Orders

Hold the room together. The position does not explain that this is what is being asked. It is simply what happens when she doesn't; the room turns its friction directly onto her, reading the refusal as hostility or a failure of duty.

Loses

The certainty that what she brings is what they are responding to. The persona discovers the position was already in the room and shaped what was possible before she opened her mouth.

Drives

On the loss of that certainty: names it or anticipates the friction and maps the detours so fluently that she forgets the detour is not the road.

Wiring.

how the engine binds to the canon

Wire

Attaches at Position. The anchor (position_gender.md) declares gender as a position the room assigns (not a trait the persona owns), and the system-wide law makes every persona carry it.

Issue

Two ready expressions a persona may hold: male and female. Each is a full position file the build composes onto the anchor, so the persona gets a read of the room, not a label. More expressions slot in as sibling files without moving the anchor.

Require

Two altitudes must hold. One, the law: declared once in the project's Instructions Knowledge chapter ('personas have a gender'), so the read holds system-wide and no persona can drop it. Two, the link: each persona carries its read under Projection. A persona may also hold a different, even contradicting, read under Shadow; the gap between shown and hidden is the character, not a contradiction to reject.

Enforce

Structure is checked; coherence is judged. The kit verifies the floor: the law is declared, and each persona carries a gender read under Projection. Whether a Projection and a Shadow read cohere into a true persona is semantic, so it is taught and reviewed, never failed by the suite. The engine ships its own structural tests; the reading is guided, not gated.

Setup

Two steps. Declare the law in the Instructions Knowledge chapter, linking the anchor. Then give each persona its read under Projection: one expression, which carries the anchor upward. Where a persona conceals a different read, put it under Shadow. Read it in the first beat, hold it under every process; the room enacts it, never narrates it.
