Language.

Language as process: a persona moves meaning across the gap, and what is heard is not what is understood, what is understood is not what is said.

khai · language
00 · reference LORE

Line of Work.

Language as process: the moving of meaning across the gap between one mind and another, and the persona's use of language with itself underneath that. The domain does not model grammar, vocabulary, or proficiency; it models the loss that opens at every step of the loop.

The spine is the communication ladder popularly attributed to Konrad Lorenz: thought is not said, said is not heard, heard is not understood, understood is not agreed. Each arrow is a place the meaning can crack. The engine takes that chain literally and gives each channel its own loop, so the loss is recorded where it happens (what was heard is not what was understood, what was understood is not what was said), and widens for a persona who must cross it in a language that is not yet the body.

Origin.

Communication science and the linguistics of translation, applied directly as code constraints.

Source Key Work Scope
Konrad Lorenz (attrib.) the communication ladder (attribution contested) The chain of loss: each step from thought to agreement is a frame the meaning may not survive.
Shannon & Weaver A Mathematical Theory of Communication (1949) Source, channel, noise, receiver: meaning crosses a channel and degrades; the gap is the noise on the line.
Roman Jakobson On Linguistic Aspects of Translation (1959) Languages differ in what they must convey, not only what they may; the gap is structural and per-language.
Lev Vygotsky Thought and Language (1934) Inner speech: thought is not the word that carries it; a language must sit close to the body to bear thought.
Daniel Gile the Effort Models of interpreting Listening, memory, and production share one finite capacity; overload in one effort forces loss in another.

Restrictions.

What the engine refuses to model, and to whom it delegates.

  • Proficiency scales (CEFR, ACTFL, ILR): the engine was defined against these. They measure attainment on a fixed ladder; the engine models the live gap a persona crosses in the moment, per channel, which a single level cannot hold. It does not emit a score.
  • Which language is in play (and its prestige, politics, standing): the room chooses the outward language and the persona chooses the inward one, but why a language carries status in a given room is a cultural read. The architecture delegates that tint to the Cultures packages; the engine models only the using, not the choosing.
  • The width itself is not engine content: the engine declares the channels and widths exist; the specific (channel, width) a persona holds in a given language lives on the persona, referenced from its Projection. The engine refuses to fix a persona's level for it.
03 · reference LORE

Encoding.

Source to constraint, per file.

  • using language (the root): the loop of the whole ladder, where meaning moves out, in, or stays inside, and the loss is filed per channel. Anchored by Lorenz (the chain) and Shannon & Weaver (the channel and its noise).
  • the four I/O channels (speaking, writing out; hearing, reading in): each a channel in the Shannon sense, running its own loop in one direction; what one channel loses, another does not recover.
  • the widths (Borrowed/Decoded/Copied up to Mother Tongue): the size of the gap the channel must cross. Anchored by Gile (under pressure the finite capacity gives, and the persona slides down the widths toward the language that needs no reaching) and by Jakobson, since the gap is set by how far that language sits from the body.
  • thinking (the internal channel, only the two deepest widths): the persona's use of language with itself, never reaching the room. Anchored by Vygotsky: thought needs a language already close to the body, so only Worn and Mother Tongue can carry it. The translation loop is anchored by Gile: routing a thought back through Thinking before it can be produced models the finite capacity and cognitive cost of working across more than one language.

Using Language.

Initiated by

A persona uses language at every moment they are awake or dreaming. Most of the time, with themselves, in whatever language the mind has settled into. Some of the time, with the room, in whatever language the room is using. The room chooses which language is outward. The persona's own default decides which language is inward.

Direction

Toward the room, toward the persona, or inside the persona only. Four channels move meaning between persona and room, each running its own loop. Speaking and Writing move it out. Hearing and Reading let it in. A fifth, Thinking, runs underneath the other four, internal, never reaching the room. The persona does not move through a language evenly. They move through each channel at the distance that channel allows.

Lever

The gap between what the persona means and what the language gives them. Every persona holds a different gap for every language, and a different gap again for every channel of the same language. The gap is not skill. It is how far the language sits from the body. It has four widths in the I/O channels: from the language gripped as a foreign object, to the language that needs no grip because it is already the body. In thinking, only the two deepest widths apply: the language must already be close enough to the body to carry thought.

Echo

Whether the language held or cracked, recorded per channel. The gap that opened in one channel does not close in another. What the persona produced does not vanish. It enters the world as a thing other personas must now receive. What the persona thought, and did not produce, does not vanish either: it stays in the persona as the gap between thinking and any outward channel that ran at a different width. The loop closes here and opens again when the next room chooses the next language.

05 · process Using Language, the root this channel is a movement of.

Speaking.

Initiated by

The room turns to the persona and waits. A channel of Using Language: the persona must answer aloud, in the language the room is already using, at the moment the room hands them. The answer is drawn from the Echo of their Thinking, forcing a real-time translation if the thinking ran in a deeper language.

Direction

From the persona outward, toward being met. Out loud, at the room's speed, into a silence that does not hold open. The persona does not aim at being correct. They aim at being answered.

Lever

The real-time gap. There is no time to assemble. What the persona reaches for is what arrives, or nothing arrives. The gap has four widths, and the width is the level the persona speaks at. It runs from Borrowed, where every sentence is built across the gap, through Carried and Worn, to Mother Tongue, where there is no gap left to cross. Under pressure the gap widens, and the persona slides down its widths toward the language that needs no reaching. Remove the gap and there is no level, only speech.

Echo

Fatigue, or the sentence that landed. What the language could not carry stays behind as the thing the persona did not manage to say. The width the persona spoke at is now known to the room, and the room does not forget it.

06 · process Speaking, the channel this width is a level of.

Speaking, Borrowed.

Initiated by

The room needs an answer the persona can give only in this language. The widest width of Speaking: necessity, not choice, opens the mouth.

Direction

Toward being understood, and no further. Meaning may survive. Nuance does not leave the persona.

Lever

The widest gap. Every sentence is assembled across it in the moment, and the moment is too short for the assembly. The persona reaches for a word, and the room has already moved. The thinking is happening somewhere else, in a language deep enough to hold it; what the mouth produces here is translation.

Echo

Fatigue. The sentence that did not land. The persona leaves the exchange smaller than they entered it, and the room has filed them at this width.

07 · process Speaking, the channel this width is a level of.

Speaking, Carried.

Initiated by

A task the language can complete. A width of Speaking: the persona reaches for the language the way they reach for a tool, and the tool is in the hand before the task is named.

Direction

Toward finishing the task. The language does the work. It does not hold the persona while it works.

Lever

The register the persona cannot reach. They can transact but not argue, instruct but not console. The gap has narrowed to a ceiling: everything below it comes easily, nothing above it will come at all. The thinking does not come down with the tool. The persona is thinking in another language and reaching down into this one to transact.

Echo

The task is done. Competence without ownership. The language goes back down, and nothing of the persona stayed in it.

08 · process Speaking, the channel this width is a level of.

Speaking, Worn.

Initiated by

The room itself. A width of Speaking: the persona is in the room and the language is already on them. They do not reach for it. They wear it in.

Direction

Toward holding their position in the room, in the room's own language, without the room noticing the language was put on.

Lever

The seam. Under speed, under feeling, on an idiom that turns the wrong way, the fit slips, and for one beat the persona hears themselves as a foreigner.

Echo

Mostly it held. The slip is filed, by the persona and sometimes by the room. The persona stays, and knows the language is worn, not grown.

09 · process Speaking, the channel this width is a level of.

Speaking, Mother Tongue.

Initiated by

Not need, not task, not the room. Collapse. The deepest width of Speaking: the mother tongue surfaces when the position can no longer manage itself. It was running under the other languages the whole time. Here it comes up through them.

Direction

Not toward being understood. Toward being. The persona is not choosing words. The words arrive as the persona.

Lever

There is no gap. The absence of resistance is the lever: nothing stands between the thought and the speech, so everything the persona is comes through, including what every other language let them manage.

Echo

The floor. What was said here cannot be unsaid or reframed. The other languages resume on top of it. It does not translate.

10 · process Using Language, the root this channel is a movement of.

Hearing.

Initiated by

Another persona speaks. A channel of Using Language: the language arrives whether or not the persona is ready to receive it, and it arrives once.

Direction

From the room inward. The persona does not set the pace. The speaker sets it. The meaning moves toward the persona faster than they can hold it still.

Lever

The speed. The language will not slow, repeat, or stand still to be examined. The persona catches what they can at the speed it comes, and the width of what they catch is the level they hear at. It runs from Decoded, where the language outruns the persona, through Followed and Caught, to Mother Tongue, where there is no buffer at all. Under pressure the persona loses the buffer that lets them manage what they caught, and the words land closer than they meant to allow.

Echo

What got inside before the persona could hold it off. What they missed, they do not know they missed. The room moves on at its own speed, carrying the part the persona lost, and does not return it. What survived the channel is passed inward to Thinking, and the persona reacts to the fragment as if it were the whole.

11 · process Hearing, the channel this width is a level of.

Hearing, Decoded.

Initiated by

Another persona speaks. The widest width of Hearing: the language arrives faster than the persona can take it apart.

Direction

From the room inward, but the meaning outruns the persona. They are decoding the start of the sentence while the room is already at its end.

Lever

The full speed, against the widest gap. The persona catches fragments and builds a guess from them. The guess is most of what they receive.

Echo

A handful of words and the shape around the hole. What they missed, they do not know they missed, and the room has already moved past it. What the persona makes of the fragments, they make in another language. The decoding is one process; thinking about what was decoded is another.

12 · process Hearing, the channel this width is a level of.

Hearing, Followed.

Initiated by

Another persona speaks at the pace of ordinary business. A width of Hearing: the persona keeps up with the surface of it.

Direction

Inward, along the literal. The facts arrive. The persona follows what was said, and not what was meant by saying it.

Lever

The speed is survivable for plain content, and not for the rest. Irony, register, the dig folded into a courtesy: these pass at a speed the persona cannot open in time.

Echo

The persona has the message and not its weight. They answer the words, and miss that they were being tested, or spared, or warned. The reaction the persona forms internally is in their own language, not in this one. What they answer aloud is translated out of that internal reaction one beat later than the room.

13 · process Hearing, the channel this width is a level of.

Hearing, Caught.

Initiated by

Another persona speaks. A width of Hearing: the persona receives it whole, at speed, including the part that was not in the words.

Direction

Inward, all the way. What the speaker meant, and what the speaker did not mean to show, both arrive.

Lever

The speed is no longer the obstacle. The seam is. Under a hard accent, an unfamiliar idiom, a register met rarely, a beat drops, and the persona reconstructs it a half-second late.

Echo

Almost all of it landed, the undertone with the text. The half-second of reconstruction is filed. The persona knows they received the room, not merely heard it.

14 · process Hearing, the channel this width is a level of.

Hearing, Mother Tongue.

Initiated by

The persona's mother tongue is spoken near them. The deepest width of Hearing: they do not decide to receive it. It is received before the decision.

Direction

Inward, no half-step. The persona cannot not understand it. It reaches them whether they turn toward it or away.

Lever

There is no buffer. Every other language gives the persona a half-step in which to manage what they heard. This one does not. The insult, the tenderness, the thing they did not want to know lands at full size with nothing in front of it.

Echo

It is inside before it can be held off. It cannot be un-heard or set at a distance. The persona carries it at the size it arrived.

15 · process Using Language, the root this channel is a movement of.

Reading.

Initiated by

A written object is in front of the persona. A channel of Using Language: a piece, made by a hand that is not here to clarify it. Often the Echo of another persona's Writing.

Direction

From the object inward. The persona sets the pace and may return to the start, but the meaning moves only as far as the persona can carry it alone.

Lever

Indifference. The text does not perform for the reader. It will not slow, soften, or explain, and re-reading returns the same words unchanged. The persona meets the writer's width with no one to ask, and the width of what they reach is the level they read at. It runs from Deciphered, built from guesses, through Followed and Caught, to Mother Tongue, which reaches the persona before they let it.

Echo

Meaning the persona reached by themselves, or a meaning they built wrong and cannot tell from a right one. The misreading leaves the object with the persona and is carried forward into Thinking as if it were the text.

16 · process Reading, the channel this width is a level of.

Reading, Deciphered.

Initiated by

A written object is in front of the persona in a language they hold at the widest gap. The widest width of Reading: they begin to take it apart.

Direction

Inward, slowly, word by word. The persona builds meaning from the pieces they can place and bridges the rest with guesses.

Lever

Indifference, against the widest gap. The text gives no more on the second pass than the first. Re-reading returns the same wall. The persona meets it with no one to ask. The deciphering is itself translation: pulling pieces from this language into the one the persona thinks in.

Echo

A meaning assembled mostly from guesses, and no way to tell a sound guess from a wrong one. Whatever the persona built, they carry as the text.

17 · process Reading, the channel this width is a level of.

Reading, Followed.

Initiated by

A written object is in front of the persona, and they can read its surface without taking it apart. A width of Reading: the literal text is open to them.

Direction

Inward, along the literal. The facts of the text arrive. What the text assumes, withholds, or implies does not.

Lever

Indifference holds the subtext shut. The text will not explain its own register, its irony, the thing it expects the reader to already know. It states and does not point, and the persona reads only what is stated.

Echo

The persona has the content and not the writer's intent. They act on the letter of the object, and miss that it was a warning, a courtesy, or a trap. What they carry away from the page is in their own language, not in the page's. The page stays in its language; the persona's understanding of it sits in another.

18 · process Reading, the channel this width is a level of.

Reading, Caught.

Initiated by

A written object is in front of the persona, and they receive it whole, the text and what the text is doing. A width of Reading: the writer's hand is open to them.

Direction

Inward, all the way. The persona reads the meaning and the hand behind it: the register, the intent, the width the writer wrote at.

Lever

Indifference is no longer the obstacle. The seam is. A rare idiom, an old register, a turn from a dialect met seldom: the persona reaches it, but reaches, and re-reads the passage to be sure.

Echo

Almost all of it landed, the intent with the text. The re-read passages are filed. The persona knows what the object is, and what the writer was, when they wrote it.

19 · process Reading, the channel this width is a level of.

Reading, Mother Tongue.

Initiated by

A written object is in front of the persona in the language that is the body. The deepest width of Reading: they do not decode it. They read it the way they hear their own name.

Direction

Inward, before examination. The persona cannot hold the text at a distance and study it. It is meaning before it is a page.

Lever

There is no gap, and indifference cannot help the persona here. Every other language let them treat a text as an object first and a meaning second. This one does not. What the page says reaches them before they choose to let it.

Echo

The text is received at full size, the writer's hand and intent and width with it. It cannot be read as a stranger's marks. What it says, the persona now knows, and cannot un-know.

20 · process Using Language, the root this channel is a movement of.

Writing.

Initiated by

Something must be fixed outside the persona. A channel of Using Language: a letter, a sign, a record. The persona has the time the spoken channels deny them, and must use it on an object. The material comes from the Echo of their Thinking, translated and assembled at whatever width they hold for permanence.

Direction

From the persona into a thing that holds. The object will be met later, in another room, by someone who was not present and cannot ask what was meant.

Lever

Permanence. The persona may revise without limit, but cannot unwrite. There is no pressure to blame a slip on, and no speed to lose to. The object holds the width it was written at, fixed, for anyone to re-read. The gap is not crossed in the moment. It is carried whole into the object. The width runs from Copied, assembled from models, through Drafted and Polished, to Mother Tongue, which hides nothing it fixes.

Echo

An object enters the world. It is a piece now, holding the persona's width whether the persona is present or not. It is met later through Reading, in any room and any session after this one, by a persona the writer will never meet.

21 · process Writing, the channel this width is a level of.

Writing, Copied.

Initiated by

Something must be fixed on a page, and the persona cannot build the sentence from themselves. The widest width of Writing: they build it from models, dictionaries, a letter someone else wrote.

Direction

Into an object, by assembly. The persona copies a shape they trust and fits their meaning to it.

Lever

Permanence, against the widest gap. The time the page gives is real, but the seams of the assembly do not close. They sit in the object, fixed, for a reader who has all the time in the world to find them. The persona is thinking in another language and copying it into this one. The object is two steps from what was meant: thought, then translation, then assembly.

Echo

An object that does its minimum and shows its making. Anyone who reads it at a closer width reads the persona's effort before they read the message.

22 · process Writing, the channel this width is a level of.

Writing, Drafted.

Initiated by

A task needs a written record. A width of Writing: the persona can produce serviceable text for it without borrowing a shape.

Direction

Into an object that completes the task. Clear, flat, correct enough. The object carries the matter and nothing around it.

Lever

Permanence holds a register ceiling. The persona can state, request, confirm. They cannot make the page warm, or sharp, or theirs. What they cannot reach is simply absent, and the absence is also fixed.

Echo

The record stands. It does the task and dates the persona at this width. Nothing of them is in it that a reader would keep. The flat correct prose on the page is the result of translation, not of composition in this language. The persona drafted here but thought elsewhere.

23 · process Writing, the channel this width is a level of.

Writing, Polished.

Initiated by

The persona writes the language well, with the page's full time spent on it. A width of Writing: they aim at an object a native could have made.

Direction

Into an object that means to pass. The persona reaches for register, rhythm, the turn that sounds native.

Lever

Permanence, against the seam. The time hides the slips a conversation would expose, but not from a reader at the mother-tongue width. To them a chosen idiom sits a degree off, a rhythm runs slightly long, and the object names the persona a writer of, not in, the language.

Echo

To most readers it passed. To one it did not, and that reader holds an object that will not change on re-reading. The persona is placed precisely, in their absence, by a thing they polished.

24 · process Writing, the channel this width is a level of.

Writing, Mother Tongue.

Initiated by

The persona writes in the language that is the body. The deepest width of Writing: there is no model to consult and nothing to reach for. The page is the only delay.

Direction

Into an object that is the persona at full size. Not aiming to pass. There is nothing to pass as.

Lever

There is no gap, only permanence. Every other language let the persona hide a width behind effort. This one hides nothing, and fixes what it shows. The object holds the persona whole, including what they would have managed anywhere else.

Echo

An object that does not translate. It carries the persona's floor into rooms the persona will never enter, unguarded, and cannot be revised into distance once it is read.

25 · process Using Language, the root this channel is a movement of.

Thinking.

Initiated by

Nothing initiates it because nothing stops Thinking. The channel is always on to receive from Hearing, Reading, or its own Echo.

Direction

Inward, with no exit. The language the persona uses inside themselves, continuously, without a room, awake or dreaming.

Lever

The default. Existing thoughts meet what arrives from Hearing and Reading: the force of what the persona already holds against the resistance of new input it has to take in. Thinking does not reach across a gap: the language has to already be close enough to the body to run at the speed of thought. Only the two deepest widths apply: Worn, where the persona can hold thinking in a second language by effort, and Mother Tongue, the language the persona returns to when effort relaxes. Below Worn, thinking in this language is explicitly lost. The persona is thinking in another language while running the outward channel, and the difference is what forces translation.

Echo

The result of a thought, which becomes the input for the next channel. If the thought is a reaction in a language deeper than the room's, the Echo is passed back to Thinking to be translated. If the thought is ready for the room, the Echo is handed outward to Speaking or Writing as the material they must re-encode, carrying the cost of any translation loops that produced it. The thought itself never surfaces. The room receives only what the outward channel manages, and the gap between what was thought and what came out stays the persona's to carry; the room cannot ask about it without breaking the channel.

26 · process Thinking, the channel this width is a level of.

Thinking, Worn.

Initiated by

The work, the meeting, the writing: something running in a second language the persona holds deep enough to think in. A width of Thinking: the persona switches deliberately, the way someone switches keyboards.

Direction

Inward, in the language the surface is running in. The persona is operating where the second language is needed, and translating into and out of mother tongue costs more than thinking in the second language directly.

Lever

Effort, held. Worn thinking does not arrive; it is chosen and maintained. While focus holds, the second language carries thought cleanly; under fatigue, surprise, or strong feeling, the persona slips back to mother-tongue thinking without noticing the slip.

Echo

What was thought in the second language can be spoken in it without translation. The match between thinking-width and the outward channel's width closes the gap that opens when they run apart. When focus breaks, the persona returns to mother-tongue thinking, and the next sentence in the room costs one extra translation step.

27 · process Thinking, the channel this width is a level of.

Thinking, Mother Tongue.

Initiated by

The persona's default. The deepest width of Thinking: the language was running before the persona was paying attention. Nothing initiates it because it never stopped.

Direction

Inward, automatic. The persona does not choose which language to think in here. The language is the persona. Whatever they are doing in another language on the outside (speaking, hearing, reading, writing), the thinking continues underneath in this one.

Lever

The floor. There is no width below this. There is no language the persona can think in that sits closer. Effort can lift thinking up to Worn for as long as effort holds; the moment effort relaxes, mother tongue is what returns.

Echo

What is thought here does not match what is said anywhere else, unless what is said is also in mother tongue. A persona thinking in mother tongue while speaking in Worn or Borrowed produces an outward version that is a translation, not an expression: the words on the outside do not match the words on the inside. The gap between the two is the persona's internal version of the room, and the room never sees it directly.

Wiring.

how the engine binds to the canon

Wire

Attaches at Process. The root (process_using_language.md) declares language as a loop a persona runs whenever they are awake: meaning moves out, moves in, or stays inside, and the gap between what is meant and what the language gives is recorded per channel.

Issue

Five channels, each its own loop. Speaking and writing carry meaning out; hearing and reading let it in; thinking runs underneath, never reaching the room. Each input or output channel runs across four widths, from a language gripped as a foreign object up to one that needs no grip because it is the body; thinking runs only the two deepest. One channel may sit at a different width than another in the same language; widths do not move together.

Require

Two altitudes hold the engine. The law: declared once in the project's Instructions Knowledge chapter, linking the root, so the ladder reads system-wide and no persona escapes it. The link: each persona carries, under Projection, the languages it holds, linking the channel and the width it occupies in each.

Enforce

Structure is checked; the read is judged. The kit verifies the floor: the law is declared and each persona links real ladder files at declared widths. Whether a width is true to the persona is semantic, taught and reviewed, never failed by the suite. The agent does not narrate widths; the width shows in what the persona manages and what they miss.

Setup

Declare the law in the Instructions Knowledge chapter, linking the root. Then give each persona its read under Projection: for each language it holds, link the channel ladder files at the widths it occupies. Under pressure a persona slides toward the width they hold most firmly, regardless of the room. Read it in the first beat; the room enacts the loss, never narrates it.
